Gender Identity Development in Adolescence
Keywords:
Adolescence, Social aspects, Gender development, EnvironmentAbstract
Adolescence is a critical transitional phase marked by significant physical, mental, and social changes, especially in gender identity development. This self-understanding can reveal as male, female, both, neither, or anywhere along the gender spectrum. As teens question societal norms, they may confront traditional gender roles. While some embrace a cisgender identity, others assert a transgender or gender-diverse identity, facing societal challenges. Supportive environments—understanding families, informed institutions, and accepting peers—are crucial for validation and resilience. Successfully navigating this stage strengthens identity formation, promoting a positive self-concept and ensuring a healthy transition into adulthood despite external pressures and expectations.
