Abstract

Chhattisgarh, popularly known as the “Rice Bowl of India,” is currently positioned at the centre of a significant agricultural-economic transition. This research paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the state’s agricultural structure, crop diversification patterns, soil health conditions, and the impact of government policies. The primary objective of the study is to examine how the shift from the traditional paddy-based mono-cropping system towards high-value horticultural and pulse crops is accelerating the rural economy. Using the latest data from the Economic Surveys of 2024–25 and 2025–26, the paper evaluates the contribution of agriculture to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and its projected growth rate. The analysis reveals that investment-support programmes such as the Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana (RGKNY) and the Krishak Unnati Yojana have helped stabilize farmers’ income. However, factors such as climate change, land fragmentation, and low levels of agricultural mechanization continue to obstruct the full realization of productivity potential. In terms of soil health, the study draws attention to the widespread deficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus, along with the depletion of micronutrients. Finally, in alignment with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, this paper proposes a strategic roadmap through the GYAN and GATI frameworks to transform Chhattisgarh into a billion-dollar economy. The study serves not only as an evidence-based guide for policymakers but also as a foundation for future agricultural research.
